Napier is famous for its Art Deco architecture. The main city of the Hawkes Bay region, downtown Napier had to be completely rebuilt in 1931 after it was destroyed by a two and a half minute earthquake and a subsequent fire. A marvellous collection of buildings in the 1930s Art Deco style sprang up, and this is celebrated with a special Art Deco weekend every February.
Hawke's Bay is the nation's oldest wine-growing region and remains a top wine producer. Excellent hiking and a stunning cliff-top golf course complete the recipe for an unforgettable holiday.
New Zealand's much loved political and cultural capital lies in the heart of a landscape combining forest-clad hills and a delightful wine-growing region. Wellington steals hearts; set on a stunning harbour, with bush-clad hills all around and old wooden houses alongside sparkling glass towers, it's utterly unique. Shopping, dining and culture abound. Head north to see an island sanctuary or east to sample the latest vintage in a pretty wine-growing region.
