Day 5 Auckland / Rotorua
Time to hop in your car and hit the road – and roads don’t come much more scenic and inviting than in New Zealand. If you’re a movie fan, opt for Middle Earth – you can take a tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set here.
Black Swan Lakeside Boutique Hotel | Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 Rotorua

Sublimely strange Rotorua is home to one of the world’s most concentrated geothermal areas – the air is tinged with sulphur and the ground fizzes with hot springs. Learn the town’s backstory at the Rotorua Museum, meet the residents of Kiwi Encounter (a nursery for the country’s national bird), then witness the geothermal action at Te Puia. See geysers shoot and mud-pots gurgle, then sit down for an evening of Maori storytelling and cuisine, including a traditional hangi meal, cooked on hot stones under the ground.
Black Swan Lakeside Boutique Hotel | Meals: Breakfast

Days 7 - 8 Rotorua / Napier

Spend time strolling around the 'Coolest Capital In the World' from the city's compact centre to the fringing hills and parks.
Intercontinental Wellington | Meals: Breakfast
Distance: 195 miles | Driving time: approx. 4hrs

Edenhouse | Meals: Breakfast
Distance: 85 miles | Driving time: approx. 1hr 45mins

Day 12 Nelson

Abel Tasman National Park is a captivating swathe of golden beaches, turquoise waters, rocky promontories and verdant bush. Jump in for a swim, explore the nooks and crannies by kayak, or simply relax on deck and watch the glorious shoreline unfold.
Edenhouse | Meals: Breakfast

Days 13 - 14 Nelson / Christchurch
Drive south, dissecting the mountains and plains to reach the friendly city of Christchurch. Just to the east lies the Banks Peninsula, a rugged, volcanic protrusion riddled with quiet bays and ancient lava flows. From pretty Akaroa, take a boat trip to look for Hector’s dolphins, the smallest and rarest marine dolphins in the world.
The George Hotel | Meals: Breakfast
Distance: 260 miles | Driving time: approx. 5hrs

Days 15 - 16 Christchurch / Franz Josef
Running from Christchurch to Greymouth, and slicing through the mighty Southern Alps, the TranzAlpine is one of the planet’s greatest train trips. Ride this dramatic railway, then drive on to Franz Josef, where one of New Zealand’s most impressive glaciers seems to ooze right into the village. To get the ultimate view, swoop across the Franz Josef and Fox Glacier snowfields by helicopter.
Westwood Lodge | Meals: Breakfast
Distance: 240 miles | Driving time: approx. 5hrs

Day 17 Franz Josef / Queenstown
The drive from Franz Josef to Queenstown is a stunner. Trace the wild, wave-bashed west coast, then veer inland via a speckle of lakes, white rivers, alpine passes and curious kea (large mountain parrots) to reach the lakeside town.
Azur Lodge | Meals: Breakfast

Days 18 - 19 Queenstown

Queenstown is the adventure capital of New Zealand – there seems to be no activity you can’t try here, from bungy-jumping to jetboating. One trip not to miss is a scenic flight over the mountains to reach Milford Sound; land here to board a luxury cruise along the dramatic, waterfall-tickled inlet, looking out for dolphins, fur seals and penguins as you go.
