Oslo & the East of Norway
Norway has benefited from 'Scandimania': beautiful landscapes, jovial people and an emphasis on the great outdoors has visitors wild for the Scandi lifestyle. Oslo itself is replete with museums, restaurants and top-class hotels, yet easy to explore thanks to its compact size. The Olso Pass grants you free entry to over 30 museums and attractions, great if you're keen to pack in lots of sights. On cooler days warm yourself with the perfect brew: it's said that Oslo coffee is the best in Europe, and its coffee-drinking culture means cosy cafés serving myriad artisanal blends. A short boat trip can take you to the islands of the Oslo Fjord; pack a picnic and set sail to Hovedøya, which has beautiful forests and great swimming spots.
So close to the Arctic Circle and its wild, desolate appeal, Oslo heritage is rich in polar exploration, such as The Viking Ship Museum and Fram Museum. Art lovers can view the works of Oslo's most famous artist Edvard Munch at the National Gallery or the Munch Museum. Holmenkollen Ski Museum & Tower is home to the world's oldest ski jump, a terrifying edifi ce affording stunning views over the city in both summer and winter, when the landscape changes dramatically as it's blanketed in snow. The Opera House is another observation landmark; visitors can walk on its modern roof for views across the city or catch a mesmerising ballet performance.
Head inland to the Jotunheimen National Park characterised by majestic mountains, glaciers, lakes and rich flora. Enjoy the view from the top of Galdhøpiggen, Norway's tallest mountain, or walk along the narrow, but popular, Besseggen Ridge.
