Al Hajar Mountains
Nizwa is the gateway to the foothills of the Al Hajar mountain range. Visit Wadi Nakher located in the depth of Oman's deepest canyon. Visit Misfah, a pretty mountain village with stone dwelling still in existence. While heading for Jebel Shams, stop at the terrace farming village of Wadi Ghul. Follow the winding road that leads to Jebel Akhdar (2000m above sea level) the green jewel of the Al Hajar mountain ranges, a truly unique spot in the Arabian Peninsula. Enjoy the cool climate up in the mountains.
Al Jebel al Akhdar is famed for its fruit orchards, laid out terrace style along the slopes of mountains, which are endowed with natural springs and aflaj (traditional irrigation system). A large variety of fresh fruits such as peaches, apricot, fig, grapes, apple, pears, plums, almond, walnuts are grown here. The region is well known for the pomegranate fruit which is of a very superior quality. The villages of Saiq, Wadi Bani Habib (the village of the old houses) & Al Ain dot the landscape. The villages overlook a spectacular landscape of dramatic peak, gorges and wadis. The damask roses of Jebel al Akhdar fill the air with fragrance when in full bloom during March and April. Rose water is distilled in the homes of the villagers.
Best time to be there
Oman's climate differs from one area to another. It is hot and humid in the coastal areas in the summer between May and August, while it is hot and dry in the interior with the exception of the higher mountains, which enjoy a moderate climate round the year. The climate is best from September through to April.

We particularly appreciated the friendly staff, who got the professional/casual balance just right; the magnificent breakfast spread; the wafts of frankincense; the sunsets; the sheer relaxation provided by the spa; the library; the open fire; the gym that made room for breakfast and, not least, the alcohol licence!
