The second largest jungle after the Brazilian Amazon, the Peruvian Amazon, known as "Amazonia", is considered to be the best preserved part of the Amazon Jungle. With a breathtaking abundance of flora and fauna, it contains over 70% of the living species on the planet; in the southern jungle alone there are 1,000 different species of birds and 15,000 different plant varieties.
Peru currently has approximately 5% of its territory protected by a system of 50 national parks, reserves, sanctuaries and other designated areas; a process which has developed extremely well since it began in the 1960s. Two of these protected areas, the Manu Biosphere Reserve and the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone, can be found in Peru's southern jungle whilst the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve can be found in the northern jungle and accessed from Iquitos, the northern gateway to the Peruvian Amazon basin.
