The second largest jungle after the Brazilian Amazon, the Peruvian Amazon is considered to be the best preserved part of the Amazon Jungle. With a breath taking abundance of flora and fauna, it contains over 70% of the living species on the planet;in the southern jungle alone there are 1,000 different species of birds and 15,000 different plant varieties. The might Amazon River runs through the north of the country and, together with its tributaries, forms the vast stretch of lowland jungle.

Peru currently has approximately 5% of its territory protected by a system of 50 national parks, reserves, sanctuaries and other designated areas that are a joy to explore, either by boat or by staying in a rustic (with all the added comforts) lodge. But which to choose? Easily accessible from Cusco, Puerto Maldonado is the gateway to exploring the Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone in southern Peru, home to the Madre de Dios River, which you'll cruise down to your chosen accommodation.

Lodges, such as Reserva Amazonica, are the obvious choice for those who want to base themselves in the centre of the jungle but still enjoy all the luxurious touches of comfortable accommodation. Set within its own private ecological reserve, Reserva Amazonica Lodge is set on the borders of Tambopata, and its spacious bungalows and private suites have to been seen to be believed –you really are miles from nowhere. We love the Tambopata Suites for an extra treat: they offer a private terrace, plunge pool and outdoor rain shower for added luxury. You can take short daily trips into the jungle by boat or on foot and still return to your stunning lodge each night. What's more, the lodges are family-oriented, with a wide range of facilities and activities for children, so it's the ideal choice if you're travelling with little ones.

Travel further north to Iquitos on the banks of the Amazon River itself and you can board an expedition vessel, perfect if you're feeling more adventurous! Two of our favourites are Aria and Aqua, and while on board you can cruise along the river towards the Pacaya Simiria Reserve, watching the fascinating world of Amazonia float by as you look out for pink river dolphin in the early morning cool. You can take a small skiff past dense forest on the banks of smaller tributaries to hunt for monkeys, sloths and the celebrated giant Victoria Regia water lilies. All of our boats have expert naturalist guides on board, so you're free to ask as many questions as you like along the way.

Guest Testimonial

Javier Peralta (our guide in Cusco, Machu Picchu and thereabouts) and Edwin Frisancho Carrasco (driver in same place) were both simply AMAZING! We have been to different parts of the world and have had lots of different guides but these two people were the best we have experience by a mile.
