Weather

During winter Portugal experiences a similar temperature pattern to the Spanish coastal towns of around 16°C during the day, however the Portuguese resorts are much wetter. A gradual warming-up process takes place during the spring months although the Atlantic-facing coast remains wetter than the Mediterranean-facing Spanish coast, with about 18 dry days per month. During the summer months, Portugal is warm and receives refreshing sea breezes, making for very pleasant conditions. September and the first part of October form an extension of summer but the temperature drops back by November and the end of the autumn has reverted to being a wet period.

luxury holidays in Portugal

A centre of exploration and the birthplace of a great world empire, Portugal is a fascinating destination that blends the charm of ancient town and city centres with a selection of golden sandy beaches, swept clean each day by the Atlantic tides.

Luxury holidays in Portugal with Abercrombie & Kent gets you closer to the sights and sounds of a traditional way of life, whilst beautiful Atlantic beaches are never far way.

A World Heritage site, the region of Douro Valley has remained loyal to its strong wine culture and is famous for the Port Wine. The medieval town of Lamego is also well worth a visit during your luxury holiday in Portugal - with its 12th Century Gothic cathedral, the small church of Santa Maria de Almacave plus various elegant 17th Century buildings.

Start your Portugal travel in the capital, Lisbon, rich with a history of exploration and discovery, and where many buildings and monuments reflect its maritime past. Contemporary Lisbon can be described as both cosmopolitan and quaint, where modern architecture blends in with ancient monuments and a zest for life is reflected in an insatiable appetite for music and nightlife.

Take your luxury holiday in Portugal south, to the country's best-known holiday region, the Algarve, famous for its year-round championship golf courses, lively social scenes and beaches that range from broad swathes of golden sand to small and sheltered coves. The relatively recent tourist development has done little to change the area's intrinsic character. You will still find little inland villages where time seems to have stood still - unspoilt fishing villages are modestly fortified against Moorish invasion and local restaurateurs queue at the quay to select the menu for the evening ahead.

Standing clear and proud above the Atlantic depths is the semi-tropical island garden of Madeira - another fantastic Portugal holiday destination.  Warmed by the Gulf Stream it is a year-round favourite with visitors in search of peace and tranquillity. The southern coast, where you can discover the capital Funchal, is protected by a ridge of mountains and is the warmest and sunniest part of the island.
