From enviable beaches and eclectic architecture to quaint fishing villages and famous vineyards, Portugal is a culture-rich country brimming with old world charm. Its surf-lashed Atlantic beaches, wonderful city architecture and world famous vineyards have always delighted returning guests. Lisbon, drizzled across seven hills, is Europe's oldest city. Alongside Roman stones and medieval convents, it sports exquisite tile work on every corner: rich with a history of exploration and discovery, many buildings and monuments reflect its maritime past. Contemporary Lisbon can be described as both cosmopolitan and quaint, where modern architecture blends in with ancient monuments and a zest for life is reflected in an insatiable appetite for music and nightlife. The World Heritage Site of the Douro Valley is as spectacular as it is tasty: with vertiginous riverbanks sculpted by centuries of vineyard cultivation, the world's oldest wine producing region is also the home of famous port. Nearby Lamego pours stunning architecture into the bottle with its 12th-century castle, Gothic cathedral and Renaissance and Baroque mansions, and there are more man-made masterworks in the Algarve where the magnificent beaches are backed by manicured championship golf courses –and despite its popularity the area has retained its local charm. Porto is a tightly-clustered assortment of colourful tumbledown houses, soaring bell towers and stately Baroque churches, connected by a winding network of narrow streets and zigzagging staircases which emerge in pretty, sun-drenched plazas. Portugal's best-known holiday region is the Algarve, famous for its year-round championship golf courses, lively social scenes and beaches that range from broad swathes of golden sand to small and sheltered coves.
Portugal with A&K
Portugal's generous hand of attractions, from surf-lashed Atlantic beaches to the wonderful city architecture and world famous vineyards has always delighted our returning guests. But that very diversity makes it more important to place your travel in expert, experienced hands, who can seamlessly combine some or all of the country's highlights - and that means A&K.
Our European team has provided luxury travel to every corner of the continent for over 25 years with knowledgeable staff, long established contacts and superb multilingual guides. They offer you unique insight and access from tours with historians, artists and botanists to gourmet cooking lessons. The perfect Portuguese custard tart, anyone?
The capital, Lisbon, drizzled across seven hills, is Europe's oldest city. Alongside Roman stones and medieval convents, it sports exquisite tile work on everything from towers to tavernas and even trams, the striking Monument to the Discoveries - one of several landmarks celebrating maritime exploration - and a very contemporary vibe with superb live music, including the opportunity to join locals in one of the unique Fado venues.
Take an Abercrombie & Kent luxury holiday to Portugal in 2015 and we'll take you to the north to where the world heritage site of the Douro Valley is as spectacular as it's tasty. With vertiginous riverbanks sculpted by centuries of vineyard cultivation, the world's oldest wine producing region is also, of course, the home of famous port. Nearby Lamego pours some stunning architecture into the bottle with its 12th century castle, Gothic cathedral and Renaissance and Baroque mansions.
There are more man-made masterworks in the Algarve where the magnificent beaches - a mix of long honeyed sand and petite coves - are backed by manicured championship golf courses. Despite its popularity the area has retained its local charm, and is punctuated by fishing villages where restaurant chefs queue at the quay to buy the best of that day's catch.
And we're only just starting. There are Sintra's UNESCO-listed romantic palaces and castles, the fishing village of Cascais, Lisbon’s Ribeira market and Cape Rock the westernmost point of the European continent. As we said, there's an awful lot to Portugal, and with A&K it's all possible.

Best time to be there
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to visit. July and August can be very hot, especially in the sheltered bays of the
Algarve in the south, though this region is especially pleasant and mild during the winter months. Madeira and the Azores benefit from the warming influence of the Gulf Stream, so can be visited year round.
