You'll likely need to up your game in the style stakes on a trip to Moscow. This is a city where even a midday stroll around Red Square necessitates a full face of makeup, skyscraper heels and a designer handbag worth more than a mid-range car, and at night-time all the proverbial stops are pulled out in favour of furs, gems and all manner of shiny accoutrements. But this is the epicentre of Russian power: home to the commanding presence of the Kremlin, the apex of Russian politics, and the country's most staggering buildings, including Stalin's 'seven sisters'; this is not a city that does anything by halves. Even its unpronounceable metro stations are adorned in frescoes, enormous paintings and bronze statues that curlicue around the rumbling walls.
Starting any trip through Moscow, or Russia even, in the unimaginably grand surroundings of Red Square is an excellent idea, with the perfect introduction to 'onion spotting' - from the brightly optimistic domes of St. Basil's iconic cathedral to the nearby burnished globes topping the absurdly extravagant Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Embrace the excess and visit the State Armoury and the Russian Crown Jewels at the Kremlin, the pre-revolutionary art at the Tretyakov Gallery and the fantastically fairytale-esque ballet at the Bolshoi.
Ararat Park Hyatt
Conveniently located in the heart of Moscow just a few minutes' walk from Red Square, the Kremlin and the Russian Parliament building, you won't find a more accessible location in the city from which to explore. Imposing on the outside and lavish on the inside, the Park Hyatt is a timeless hotel in the heart of Moscow. Behind its belle epoque exterior it is a haven of sophistication, where outstanding design and stylish interiors are complemented by attentive personalised service. All of the rooms feature views of the beautiful gardens, the extravagant Bolshoi Theatre or Neglinnaya Street's wide boulevard. Dining onsite includes Armenian specialities, European fare and modern Japanese sushi.
Four Seasons Moscow
A modern replica of the legendary Hotel Moskva which opened in the 1930s, the Four Seasons Moscow is a luxury fivestar hotel experience in Russia's capital, in an ideal location just a few steps from Red Square and the vibrant domes of St. Basil's Cathedral. When it comes to the accommodation, high ceilings and spacious rooms display neutral decor accented with bold splashes of colour and pattern, and lavish marble bathrooms feature deep-soaking tubs and separate showers. Most rooms have step-out balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows with views overlooking the Kremlin and Red Square.
