Seek out the rare shoebill on the shores of Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park

Rich with swamps, savannah and forestland, Rwanda’s 2,500km2 Akagera National Park is a biodiversity hotspot and a true conservation success story. In 2015, seven Transvaal lions from South African were reintroduced here - the first lions in Rwanda for 15 years. Come and see them thriving in Akagera National Park’s striking savannah.

Named after the Akagera River, which runs along the park’s eastern boundary, Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s less crowded destinations. Your guides will take you on a 4x4 safari tour across unspoiled savannah and sprawling plains. You’ll have ample opportunity to snap shots of Rwanda’s wildlife here. Perhaps you’ll spot buffalo, leopard, spotted hyena, giraffe or come across a herd of wild elephant. Hippo wallow in the park’s swamps, and up to 11 different species of antelope leap across its plains, including the elusive sitatunga.

When it comes to birdlife, Akagera won’t disappoint. Year round, the park is home to 500 different species of bird making it a true twitcher’s paradise.

To help you get the best out of the park, we choose only expert guides with in-depth knowledge of the flora and fauna. They’ll show you the best biodiversity spots on the shores of Lake Ihema where you may even spot the rare shoebill. Don’t forget your binoculars…

Tucked away from the more touristy regions, we can promise that your tailor-made holiday to Rwanda will be rewarded when you make Akagera National Park part of your itinerary.
