Weather

The driest months in Rwanda are between July and September and from December to January. The rains tend to fall between April and May and then again from October to November. However, trekking for gorillas involves entering the rainforests so you need to be prepared to get wet and muddy most of the year.

The Virunga Conservation Area, around the upper slopes of the dramatic Virunga volcanoes, comprises three contiguous national parks, Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda, and Parc des Virungas, commonly called Djomba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

About 350 mountain gorillas make their home in these afro-montane forest against the dramatic backdrop of the Virungas. In Parc National des Volcans (PNV), there are five habituated gorilla families and it is arguably the best place to trek the mountain gorillas. Other activities in the region include birding, trekking for Golden Monkeys, visiting local philanthropic projects or enjoying the natural beauty of the landscape and its people.

There is a selection of accommodation available within the vicinity of the park itself. One of which is Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge which is situated on the edge of the Parc National des Volcans in North Western Rwanda, with fabulous views towards the Parc National des Volcans
