THE HOTEL
The Palace Portoroz (the 'Port of Roses') is steeped in history - Archduke Franz Ferdinand once led the waltz in the hotel's grand ballroom - and has been a retreat for famous guests for years. Contemporary and determinedly upscale, the hotel is a beacon of modernity surrounded by the old world of Istria.
The rooms and suites are beautifully designed and, in counterpoint to the contemporary exterior, are inviting and homely. There are two room types, superior and deluxe, both with either French or walking balcony, high speed wireless internet, pillow menu and LCD TV. The suites have separate living areas, with private terraces and spacious bedroom areas, while the Presidential has separate entrance lobby, living room and library with two bedrooms.
The glamorous champagne bar is the place to go as the sun goes down not least thanks to its delicious cocktails.
Spring, April and May is an excellent time to travel to Slovenia, as everything is green and abundant. Summer months can be hot and are busy, September and October are cooler and winter is perfect for those who wish to ski.
