Day 1 - London/Johannesburg
Fly from London this evening to Johannesburg, where, in the morning you will be met and help you with the collection of your rental car. Drive to Fugitives' Drift Lodge which is set on a hillside overlooking the battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. Many people will know of these battles by the films made of them: Zulu Dawn for lsandlwana and Zulu for Rorke's Drift.
Day 2 - Rorke's Drift
Set deep inside the boundaries of the Fugitive's Drift Game Reserve, the 4,000 acre property is a registered Natural Heritage Site and is family-owned and run. Attentive, wellinformed staff are on hand to ensure that visitors leave with a thorough understanding of this region. The large lounge houses numerous works of art representing the Zulu War and is a veritable museum of artefacts, relics and contemporary memorabilia. You are encouraged to participate in walks and drives through the spectacular reserve. Game species include giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest, kudu, inyala as well as a variety of smaller antelope species. The bird life is diverse and abundant. Over 274 species of birds have been identified. The gorge is home to breeding colonies of rare bald ibises. Fishing in the Buffalo River is excellent and the unspoilt surroundings offer one for the perfect places to unwind.
Days 3 and 4 - Battlefields
Today visit the museum in lsandlwana where, on the battlefield itself, in the shadow of this sphinx-like rock, you will hear an inspiring lecture. Afterwards take time to visit the graves and memorials to those who fell in battle in 1879. On the way back to the lodge for lunch you will hear all about survivors and the events that followed. After lunch, head out to the museum at Rorke's Drift battlefield where you will be treated to another inspiring lecture given on the battlefield itself, followed by some time to look at the memorials and graveyard before returning to your lodge.
Surrounded by the Drakensburg mountains, overlooking the secluded Umfazommyama Valley of the Spioenkop Nature Reserve and in the lee of the famous hill, Spioenkop, lies Three Trees Lodge which overlooks the nature reserve itself. The reserve contains white rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland, kudu, numerous smaller antelope and 270 recorded bird species. During your time at Spioenkop you can visit the memorial site where Churchill was captured at the armoured train wreck on 15th November 1899. After this, travel on to Colenso where the town now stands on the battlefield where General Buller was first defeated. Seven Victoria crosses were awarded after this battle.
