Western & Northern Capes , South Africa
In the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, at the foot of the Korannaberg Mountains, lies Tswalu Kalahari. Founded in 1995, it is one of the largest private conservation projects in Africa. The 100,000 hectare reserve (over half the size of the Masai Mara) is home to thousands of animals, including the rare desert black rhino, sable and roan antelope, Cape buffalo and cheetah.
Extensively refurbished in 2008, accommodation at Tswalu epitomises the stylish yet rustic elegance typical of luxury game reserve accommodation. Motse consists of eight authentic stone-walled and thatch-roofed bungalows. For those looking for exclusivity and personal service, Tarkuni is ideal for a small party or family due to its privacy and excusive use policy. In keeping with the African style of traditional thatched roofs, the main lodge boasts a galleried library, outdoor and indoor dining areas and wine cellar. Sundowners on lantern-lit dunes, boma dining and Lekgaba Lookout offer a variety of eating experiences. Activities include game drives in open-sided, canopied safari vehicles, horse riding with a qualified equestrian and bush walks led by experienced field guides.
October to May is the best time to visit the Cape. Game viewing is better during the drier months of April to September. The wildflower season is generally from mid August to mid September. The whale watching season runs from June to November.
