Barcelona combines everything you could want on a Mediterranean break: lots of sights, a curving sweep of glamorous sandy beach and an array of chic restaurants and stylish bars that stay open until the small hours. We like the gritty cobbled streets of El Born, with its little tapas joints and cocktail bars which shake a mean Caipirinha. In direct contrast is Eixample, a large district in the centre of the city with beautiful architecture, including imposing Plaça Catalunya and the Passeig de Gràcia with its unusual boutiques and designer shops. Gaudí influences from all corners, with spooky Casa Battló peering over the city centre to quirky, colourful Parc Güell, with its curving rainbow of mosaic tiles.
The dominating Sagrada Familia boldly reaches skywards with its unfinished towers: one side a daring, modern ingress, the other a romantic, crumbling façade. La Rambla is a wide pedestrianised swathe down the city centre; ignore the tourist tat and throw yourself into La Boqueria, an ancient food market bristling with energy and local flavour. After dark try Catalonian tapas either standing at the bar at one of the tiny outlets in El Born or among the fashion houses at Tapaç 24 off the Passeig de Gràcia. End your night at Dry Martini, a revered speakeasy where gloved waiters in white tuxedos create – you guessed it – the best martinis, and chill the next day on a daybed at La Barceloneta’s laidback beaches.
The Hotel España is located in one of the liveliest regions of the city just steps from Las Ramblas, a tree-lined ribbon of green slicing through the heart of Barcelona, and the Gothic Quarter, with its maze of standing-only tapas bars and narrows streets concealing many foodie treasures. The classic building combines its history with contemporary interiors, an inviting arched entrance drawing you into a burnished lobby. Its location in and among the markets and tapas joints of the area means this is an ideal hotel for foodies, and the onsite restaurant Fonda España is managed by award-winning chef Martín Berasategui, so you’re never far from a delicious bite.
Mandarin Oriental Barcelona
The Mandarin Oriental offers the perfect base for exploring the city from its privileged position on the leafy, luxury-laden Passeig de Gràcia, sandwiched between Brioni and Tiffany & Co. Some of the best views of the city can been seen from the stylish rooftop pool and sundeck, while the spa facilities, including a herbal steam room, are ideal for unwinding after a whirlwind day of sightseeing. The highly stylised, modern interior is replete with lavish touches and splashes of colour, but our favourite offering is the personal shopping service. Let the experts bring the fashions to you and then try out your new outfits in the arty lobby – your own private catwalk.

Spain is best visited in the springtime, when the temperatures are generally warm and comfortable. Autumn is equally comfortable, though less green and the landscapes are drier. July and August are very hot.
