Mallorca

Far from its reputation as the party capital of Europe, Mallorca has matured into a diverse and cultural holiday destination with stunning scenery, traditional principles and a burgeoning foodie scene. While the nightlife is still there in abundance, Mallorca exudes old-school glamour in spades, with its pretty colonial towns and flashy coastal resorts. Many people come for the beaches: here majestic cliffs plunge dramatically into crystal clear turquoise seas, proffering frothing surf and excellent snorkelling. The island's resorts have shaped the natural coves and sandy bays of its rugged coastline, and it's true that there's a beach for everyone: laidback types will love the Caribbean-esque stretch of pine-shaded silky sand at Formentor, reached by a leisurely drive through the theatrically beautiful countryside north of Puerto de Pollença. Families will love the shallow golden arcs of the appropriately named Cala D'Or to the south west, or the long, white swathe of gently shelving beach near the Old Town of Alcúdia. The tiny cove of Cala Deià is a secret paradise for intrepid explorers, with its ethereal light and beautifully clear waters like cut glass. Conversely, Portixol is Palma's answer to Barceloneta, a fine sandy sweep just ten minutes from the city centre, with a cluster of watering holes, upmarket restaurants and gin palaces bobbing just offshore.

But Mallorca has more than just beaches: inland it boasts some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the Mediterranean, with vast plains giving way to rambling vineyards and neatly-ordered olive groves, dotted with traditional fincas and the obligatory shady palms. In the morning you can trip between the pretty villages of the interior with their twisting roads, quiet squares and friendly locals, and in the afternoon ramp up the energy with a vigorous cycling tour of the snaking roads that thread the Tramuntana Range, a favourite training ground of some of the world's best professional cyclists. Relaxation is a big part of Mallorquin life, with an emphasis on good food, family atmosphere and resounding traditions. Local produce abounds: almonds, olives, ripe tomatoes and grapes overflow from its parched fields while its restaurants serve up some of the freshest seafood in Spain. Like its beaches, Mallorca has a restaurant for any palate: traditional tomato pa amb oli in the villages, freshly-landed sea bass in its harbour restaurants or fideua, paella made with pasta, in the historic cellar bars of Palma's ancient back streets - all served a la Mallorquina, with a huge selection of seasonal vegetables. Whatever your taste, Mallorca has a flavour: friendly people (great for families), stunning beaches (never too far away), rambling vineyards (ditto) and plenty of attractions to keep even the most active occupied.

I am most grateful for your (Nicola Wallington) guide selection. Our guide was knowledgable, patient, polite, considerate, perfect in German and can be highly recommended. It was a stroke of genius on your part to have him with us during the whole trip. We would have been lost without him.
