Day 2 Colombo / Sigiriya

Landing in Sri Lanka’s charismatic capital there’s a scenic drive to Sigiriya, where you’ll be staying within five kilometres of the mystical rock fortress at Vil Uyana. This charming eco resort features individual villas dotted among the rice paddies, and here you can spend the afternoon relaxing after your flight.

Day 3 Sigiriya / Dambulla

Your hotel is in prime position for visiting the fifth century rock fortress at Sigiriya, where you’ll get to see the ruins of King Kassapa’s Palace. Rising from the central plains, the near vertical walls of the ‘lion rock’ soar to a flat summit that conceals the ruins of an ancient civilisation; from the top you’ll also be treated to mesmerising views across the mist-enveloped forests – particularly striking in the early morning. A series of sheer staircases meander the walls to the top. After lunch, it’s straight to the Dambulla Rock Temples, built in the first century BC and home to over 150 images of the Buddha.

Day 4 Sigiriya / Kandy
The last capital of the Sri Lankan kings, Kandy is a colourful town of history culture, famous for its iridescent lake and Esala Perahera festival, held over ten days every summer. The hills surrounding the city are thickly forested, the trees wreathed in clinging mists that give the town an otherworldly feel; nestled into the hills are some of the finest boutique hotels, such as Kandy House, where you’ll spend two nights.

Day 5 Kandy

Begin the day with a visit to the famous Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. After lunch explore Kandy town, dodging your way around the swirling silk sarees and careening three-wheelers that characterise the city streets. Shop for trinkets at the market, see artisans in action at an arts and craft centre, pore over the jewels on display at the gem museum and later visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, said to hold Buddha’s tooth.
The Kandy House | Meals: Breakfast

Day 6 Kandy / Galle

Galle is the jewel of the south, bursting with exotic scents of spices and sea air, the fort area crammed with pretty little shops and the architecture characterised by its collection of Dutch colonial buildings. You’ll get to stay in one yourself as you spend two nights at Tamarind Hill.
Tamarind Hill | Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 Galle
Spend the day exploring the historic fort town of Galle with craft shops, jewellers and coffee shops set within the fort walls. You may wish to visit the Handunugoda Tea Estate, a short drive from Galle and the sea. The estate is home to the famous ‘virgin white’ tea, untouched by human hands.
Tamarind Hill | Meals: Breakfast

Day 8 Galle / Colombo
Heading back to Colombo you’ll have the chance to explore the enticing capital, overflowing with colourful flowers that rightfully give it the moniker the ‘garden city of the East’. Recent development has improved its boroughs, from restoration of landmark architecture to glossy hotels and welcome seafront improvements. Your home is the slick and stylish Uga Residence, the perfect base from which to start a walking tour; we recommend exploring Old Colombo.
