Day 1 Arrive Stockholm
One-third water, one-third parkland, spread across 14 islands – Stockholm is not your typical city. It’s an inviting, fresh-air-filled capital that is as much about nature as culture and commerce. It is an invigorating place to be. Striking out from the cool, contemporary and central Nobis Hotel, spend your first afternoon getting your bearings, delving into its the narrow lanes and hip cafes.

Day 2 Stockholm
Djurgården is Stockholm’s ‘green island’, once a royal hunting ground and now a verdant enclave of meadows, pine and spruce, of trickling canals, welcoming cafes and many museums. Explore with a private guide, before tucking into a tasty lunch at Djurgårdsbrunn restaurant. Then head for the Vasa Museum, home to the wooden warship that sank in Stockholm’s harbour during her maiden voyage in 1628, and was finally raised in 1961.

Day 3 Stockholm
Gamla Stan – the Old Town – is the medieval heart of Stockholm, a tangle of cobbled lanes and slender alleys huddled on a triangle-shaped isle. A private guide will lead you into this atmospheric labyrinth, then up onto its rooftops, for the most magnificent views. Some 43m above Birger Jarl’s Square, you’ll learn about Stockholm’s past while gazing over City Hall and the cluster of old buildings and churches. Back down at street level, spend time making your own discoveries – perhaps on Skeppsholmen, where there are several excellent museums, or Södermalm, the old working class neighbourhood, now home to the city’s best bars.

Day 4 Stockholm
Enjoy one final Swedish breakfast before leaving this island idyll and heading back home.

Best visited during the long summer days from May to September when the midnight sun brings 24 hours of daylight, ideal if you are planning to spend much of your time outdoors.
Despite the very cold winters, there is still a great deal to do and see, from husky sledding to ice hotel stays and, between November and March, the chance to witness the Northern Lights.
