Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, standing at 19,340 feet (5,896m). Located in Northern Tanzania, bordering Kenya, it also spans five different ecological zones, making it one of the most varied peaks on Earth to climb.
Nearly 800 clients climb Kilimanjaro with A&K every year and we are one of the few international tour operators with our own dedicated Kilimanjaro climbing operation. We use only the finest mountain apparatus, safety equipment, communications network and specialist tents on the mountain. Safety is our priority, therefore we are one of the few operators carrying oxygen bottles, altitude chambers, first aid kits and multiple communication measures on every climb. All of our guides are trained in first aid, mountain craft, natural history as well as ecological awareness, ensuring a once in a lifetime experience. For more information about why to book with A&K we have put together this useful information page.
There are a number of routes to choose from for the Kilimanjaro Climb. The durations detailed are the minimum number of days to climb, however we strongly advise additional acclimatisation days where possible. In addition to the detailed Machame and Lemosho Route, we can also guide you on the Umbwe and Rongai routes.
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed at any time of year, January, February and September are considered the best months as they are usually warm, dry and clear with brief showers that make for good climbing conditions. July, August, November, and December are also good months. During the rainy period of March to May, clouds tend to pile up and over the summit, dropping snow on top and rain at the base. Visibility can be limited. The temperature at this time of year is relatively warm. The dry season, beginning in late June and extending through July, can be very cold at night; but is usually clear. August and September are also cool and may have completely clear days -- however, it is not unusual for a dripping cloud belt to girdle the mountain above the forest and moorland. The summit can be totally clear, but the successful climber may look down on a vast sea of clouds with distant mountain peaks poking through like islands. The shorter rainy period of October to December often has thunderstorms that pass over the mountain. Typically, the clouds disappear in the evening; so the nights and mornings are clear with excellent visibility.
