Sanctuary Saadani Safari Lodge
Why we like it
- Located in a horseshoe bay on the East Coast of Tanzania, north of Dar Es Salaam
- Fifteen tented thatched cottages all located on the beach
- Activities available are walking safaris, river boat safaris, snorkelling off the sand bank, game drives, Swahili village tour, Maasai community tour and bird walks
- Two swimming pools, one romantic rock pool hidden amongst the plants and one 24 meter infinity pool on the beach
- Expansive and remote beach
- An excellent choice of property to combine bush and beach for travellers who have limited time
Out at sea, a sand island is a lovely spot for picnics and snorkelling in warm tropical waters.
Joanne Swinton dealt with us and our holiday with endless good humour and patience. Her suggestions were perfect and we all had a magical time. She really knew her "stuff". She even organised a car and driver for our first full day in Dar es Salaam which was a kindness beyond any duty. She arranged for our unaccompanied children to be chaperoned through all the airports, and for my husband and me to be taken care of too.

Sanctuary Saadani Safari Lodge located in the Saadani National Park is an interesting mix of three different ecosystems with the Indian Ocean the bush and the Wami River creating an array of activities in this diverse park. The lodge itself offers a restaurant and bar fully stocked with fine wines, spirits and cigars, there is a private water hole and two swimming pools. All of the cottages are situated on the beach with nine classic bandas, five maridadi suites and one siri suite that has been designed especially for honeymooners and is the ultimate in luxury and privacy. The lodge does focus on being eco-friendly and coordinates conservation projects for the local villagers.
The activities that Saadani can offer due its location make it a very unique and special place to be able to go on safari in the morning and then for a walk on the beach in the afternoon. The lodge is a four hour road transfer or a 20 minute flight from Dar Es Salaam to the Saadani airstrip. As Saadani Lodge nestles in a small bay the sea water recedes at low tide and returns at high tide making swimming not possible at all times. Children of all ages welcome.
