Best time to be there

November to March. April is often the hottest month of the year, and also the month of the celebratory 'Songkran' festivals. May to October is the rainy season, with short bursts of rainstorms refreshing the green paddy fields once more.

The People

Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles and there's an intense feeling of optimism almost everywhere you go, the locals' hospitable and friendly. Our Undiscovered Thailand and Laos itinerary is one of our most popular trips, and rewards travellers with a slice of authentic Thai and Laotian life, harder to find in more popular tourist spots.

With peachy beaches, exotic landscapes, and rich Buddhist culture, Thailand has been our seductive South East Asian hub for over two decades. A&K's large Bangkok office sits that the heart of a region-wide network of experienced, highly connected staff on call 24 hours a day - a presence that can make a vital difference to your holiday.

Just ask our guests who were there in 2008. For a very short time, the 'Land of a Thousand Smiles' wore a slightly different expression. Political demonstrations closed the busy airport. Travellers couldn't enter or leave, plans were in chaos, people were desperate. Of the hundreds of A&K guests we helped, one was particularly grateful. With a high profile book signing in Japan just two days away, we organised an urgent overland exit into Cambodia, crossing the border just minutes before it closed, having booked an onward flight to Seoul, then Tokyo. It was the stuff of Hollywood movies.

Abercrombie & Kent holidays to Thailand, it goes without saying, are usually a little less tense, a little more luxurious. You can dive into Bangkok's enthralling blend of frenetic street life, stately palaces and photogenic canal markets, while staying in some of the planet's most sumptuous hotels. It's the launch point into an intoxicating country, from the jungle covered mountains of Chiang Mai in the north, where you can hike to hill villages or train as an elephant mahout, to the age-weathered 13th century stones of Sukhothai and the coastal honey pot of Krabi.

We'll take you off the mainland too. Thailand's islands are justifiably popular with powder sand and vertiginous forest. It might be fast-developing Phuket or Koh Samui, with its recent explosion of luxury hotels, or the back-to-back curling beaches of Koh Phi Phi, or dramatic limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay. Whichever you chose, we know you won't be disappointed.
