Day 1 London/Bangkok
Maximise your time by flying overnight flight to Bangkok.

Day 3 Bangkok
If Bangkok is firmly 21st century, you don’t have to travel far to step back in time. Head a little way south-west from the capital to Samut Songkhram province, pausing at an amazing country market that pops up along the railway tracks – vendors quickly pull away their stalls and wares from the tracks when the train passes, replacing them just as fast! Riverside Amphawa, known for its floating markets, is a perfect place to experience small-town Thailand. After lunch at the lovely resort of Baan Amphawa, take a stroll through the orchards at King Rama II Memorial Park to learn about traditional lifestyles through displays in typical teak buildings; then admire the work of artisans producing beautiful hand-painted Benjarong porcelain.

Day 4 Bangkok
A private guide will help you get the best from Bangkok, pointing out both lesser-known corners and spectacular sites such as the ornate Grand Palace and Emerald Buddha, one of the most sacred spots in Thailand. After your expert orientation, explore independently – perhaps visit Wat Pho and its gigantic golden Buddha, haggle at the markets of Chinatown or observe canal-side life on a boat trip through Thonburi.

Day 5 Bangkok/Chiang Mai
With a short flight, swap Thailand’s energetic capital for its tropical jungle hub – Chiang Mai is the best base for exploring the country’s lush, hilly north. Spend the afternoon relaxing at Anantara Chiang Mai Resort.

Day 6 Chiang Mai
With a guide, explore the daytime delights of Chiang Mai. Take a rickshaw ride around the old town, visit the 14th-century temple of Wat Phra Singh and head up to Wat Doi Suthep, northern Thailand’s holiest shrine, which dominates the city’s western hills. The day ends with the spectacularly romantic evening view over Chiang Mai with its millions of glittering lights.

Day 7 Chiang Mai
Be bowled over by the blooms at Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden before heading to the Elephant Camp Training Centre – to learn to be a mahout for the day. Under the tutelage of your own private elephant trainer, discover how to ‘drive’, care for and conserve these gentle giants, enjoying exclusive access to the animals. Having helped feed the elephants, tuck into your own delicious lunch – dishes in Chiang Mai are rich in Chinese and Burmese influences – and work it off at your leisure: on a city wander or by the hotel’s cool infinity pool.

Day 8 Chiang Mai/Bangkok/London
Transfer to the airport for your homeward flight, via Bangkok.
Meals: Breakfast

Want to stay longer...? From Bangkok it’s easy to dip into the rest of Indochina – why not add on Cambodia’s Angkor temples or a trip to laidback Luang Prabang in Laos?

At A&K all of our journeys are individually tailored to suit your needs and timescale. As a guide, this 8 day suggested holiday will cost from £1,950 per person, based on two sharing, including international flights at low season.
