Isaan is situated in the north east of the country bordering Laos and Cambodia is one area which rewards travellers with a slice of authentic Thai life, harder to find in the more popular tourist spots.
It is possible to fly to Bangkok and take a circular route of the region. Although you won't find five star international hotels, in our opinion this makes the region more appealing and here at A&K we have sourced some wonderful boutique characterful properties more befitting to their surroundings.
From Bangkok it is a short flight to Ubon Ratchathani: the gateway to Isaan. Travelling west it is a good idea to make a stop at Surin where you can visit a silk weaving village to learn about this craft which Isaan has become famous for. With Angkor Wat in Cambodia now attracting a vast amount of visitors many people make this journey to visit the Angkorian temples: Phnom Rung and Phimai. These temples built between the 10th and 13th centuries are some of the most impressive example of Khmer temples in existence. Phnom Rung stands on the summit of an inactive volcano with views on a clear day to Cambodia while Phimai evokes echoes of a once mighty civilisation as you wander through the atmospheric ruins. At certain times of the year you are likely to be the only visitors to these religious monuments which makes the experience that much more poignant.

In Chiang Mai we were met by Aung, who was also lovely and took care of us very well. Once again I am so glad that you recommended the 137 Pillars House, it was perfect and I would have happily stayed there some more days.

Best time to be there
November to March. April is often the hottest month of the year, and also the month of the celebratory 'Songkran' festivals. May to October is the rainy season, with short bursts of rainstorms refreshing the green paddy fields once more.
