Everything about Dubai is the biggest, brightest, richest and most glamorous. Once a dusty outpost in the Emirati desert, the city has developed, redeveloped and rebuilt itself many times over, with a constant thrum of construction activity creating the ‘next big thing’ a mere component of daily life for Dubai’s residents. Although, contrary to rumour, it does have a rich culture – rooted in Bedouin heritage and traditions of storytelling, song, dance and, oddly enough, falconry, that’s often intangible but easy to find – if you know where to look. Steamy and sweltering for most of the year, a departure into the desert is a welcome respite from the chilly UK weather.
When it comes to its dynamic ever-rising skyline, modesty goes out of the tinted skyscraper window. There’s the planet’s biggest snow park with five different ski runs, a race track hosting the world’s richest horse race, and lush fairways for its wealthiest golf tournament, all punctuated by superb shopping malls, souks and pockets of traditional architecture from tea houses to wind towers, all juxtaposed with miles of sun bleached sand, kissing crystal clear water tailor-made for dhow cruises at dusk, and a wild, remote interior with a desert worthy of a Hollywood romantic epic.
Park Hyatt Dubai
A waterfront haven in the heart of the city, the Park Hyatt Dubai is located on the tranquil banks of Dubai Creek, adjacent to the world-famous Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. Designed in Moorish style, sleek stone walls inlaid with intricate detailing surround tranquil outdoor spaces dotted with date palms. Inside, the Moorish details continue, with stone arches, lanterns and wickerwork furniture inviting you to relax. The rooms are decorated in the same theme, Moorish or Mediterranean in design, with deep soaking tubs and walk in showers. We love the sun deck surrounding the outdoor pool, perfect for enjoying the almost guaranteed sunshine.
One&Only Royal Mirage
This beachfront palace is set amid abundant gardens, laced with meandering water features and streams. The close proximity to the desert sands on the other side of skyscrapers means this really does feel like a mirage: 25 hectares of lushly landscaped grounds, rich with palms; temperature-controlled swimming pools and wellness facilities; dramatic architecture that pays homage to traditional Arabic techniques; and no fewer than eight restaurants to choose from, each serving its own unique menu. Add to that its own strip of clean, white sands, lapped by the gulf ’s clear, turquoise waters, and you’ve the perfect mix of city and beach hotel from which to enjoy your stay in Dubai.
