Chicago is the kind of city that offers something for everyone. A huge diversity of holiday experiences is there for the taking. Stunning lakefront views, a vibrant arts and culture scene, neighbourhoods with personality, award-winning dinning and no shortage of shopping options with Michigan Avenue's 'Magnificent Mile'.
Mighty skyscrapers are the first thing that you'll notice, from the famous Willis Tower (formally Sears Tower) and John Hancock Building which rise above the city, to architectural marvels such as the modern Aqua Tower and historic Jewelers Building or Tribune Tower. This city's history and modern future is told through its buildings. You could experience a compelling tour of Chicago on a river cruise, a Segway excursion or a walking guided visit through Chicago's friendly 'Greeter' Programme.
If you are a food lover, look no further; the city's local chefs are fast becoming known as the best in the US. From fine dining establishments such as Grace, Next and Elizabeth to modern American diners like Au Chevel and Little Goat diner, from famous Chicago deep dish pizza to food festivals such as Chicago Gourmet and Taste of Chicago, the city is awash with fantastic fare to satisfy every palate.
Night owls and music lovers can experience some of Chicago's famous blues music at Blue Chicago and Buddy Guy Legends, or tap their feet to a spot of Jazz at the historic Green Mill Jazz Club, which was often visited by Al Capone and remains largely unchanged since it opened in 1907. Comedy buffs will love The Second City theatre, where 'improv' comedy cabaret was born and many big names, such as Tina Fey, Steve Carell and Mike Myers honed their craft.
Chicago's Art Institute, located between Millennium Park and Grant Park, houses some of the best impressionist and post-impressionist artwork in the world. The Museum of Science and Industry offers a fantastic family day out, with the highlight of the visit being the only German WWII U-Boat in the US. Children will also enjoy seeing Beluga Whales and the marine life at the Shedd Aquarium or riding the various attractions at Navy Pier.
For something a little bit more low key, Chicago offers 33 beaches where you can laze away your holiday relaxing on the sand and cooling off in Lake Michigan, or you might choose to take a bike ride along the 19 miles of spectacular lakeshore bike paths.
If downtown Chicago isn't enough, the heart and soul of the city is found in its 77 neighbourhoods, each offering its own mix of historical sites and attractions, art and culture, dining, nightlife, shopping and personality. You might enjoy checking out the array of restaurants in West Loop, seeking out the liberating LGBT district of Boystown with its rainbow flags and epic nightlife or perhaps you could be tempted to flash the plastic with boutique shopping experiences in Wicker Park and Bucktown. The pleasures of Chicago leave a lasting impression and it's definitely a US destination not to be missed.
