Today explore the city with a sightseeing tour. Visit icons such as Ho Chi Minh’s stilted house surround by picturesque banyans and frangipani, One Pillar Pagoda and Quoc Tu Giam, a Confucian temple otherwise known as Temple of Literature. After lunch at a local restaurant, marvel at folk art, sculptures, engravings and lacquer ware by contemporary artists at the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Art.

Day 4 Hanoi/Halong Bay
Halong Bay is the tranquil antidote to the fun frenzy of Hanoi. Head to this UNESCO-listed inlet for an overnight float amid its emerald waters, echoing caves, hidden bays and limestone outcrops. At the end of the day, tuck into a sumptuous seafood dinner as the sun sets on the serene scene.

Day 5 Halong/Hoi An
Carry on cruising, gliding between some of Halong Bay's most beautiful spots. Explore a beautiful nearby cave before cruising back to the port. When it's time to disembark, head to the airport for a short flight to Danang, gateway to the long, sandy beaches and cultural highlights of central Vietnam.

Day 6 Hoi An
No town in Vietnam is as well-preserved as Hoi An: its jumble of tea shops, Japanese merchant houses and Chinese temples feels like a step back in time. Equally intoxicating are its colourful markets, abuzz with traders touting their wares –pay a visit with a local guide, who'll enable you to interact with the sellers. Finish with a boat trip on Thu Bon River which connects Hoi An with Cua Dai Beach.

Day 7 Hoi An/Ho Chi Minh City
It's only a short flight from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest and perhaps most moving metropolis. With a guide, visit the Reunification Hall and the History Museum, with its excellent collection of artefacts illustrating the evolution of Vietnamese culture, or alternatively the War Remnants Museum. Stop at the Notre Dame Cathedral in the heart of the city before finishing at the Central Post Office, designed and constructed by Gustav Eiffel.

Day 8 Ho Chi Minh City
Delve into Vietnam’s history with a visit to the Cu Chi Tunnels. This vast subterranean network, which once stretched for nearly 340km, was originally constructed by the Viet Minh in the 1940s, but used to great effect by the Viet Cong –whole communities lived in these unbelievably narrow passages.

Best time to be there
Regional climate differences mean that there is no best time; try September to December to avoid the humidity in the north, December to April to miss the rains in the south and December to March is perfect for trips to the Central highlands. Catch the Trung Thu Moon festival in September or October for traditional lion and dragon dances.
