Experience the river wild

The Lower Zambezi National Park enjoys a reputation as one of the best places in southern Africa for scenic river safaris and other water-based activities.

Covering almost 5,000km2, the Lower Zambezi became a national park in 1983 and is still relatively undeveloped. The park provides a habitat for some 400 species of bird, including fish eagle. It also regularly attracts enormous herds of elephant that can be seen along the river’s edge from your traditional bush camp at Chiawa or Old Mondoro.

Dissecting the park is the mighty Zambezi River. At its northern end a rock escarpment fringes the river, forming a physical barrier for the wildlife. Many animals gather on the riverbanks to drink and bathe. And, as you would expect, ever-watchful lions and leopards prowl nearby. Epic confrontations are commonplace here. Your safaris, led by specialist local guides with years of experience, will make sure you are always in the finest viewing spots day and night.

We recommend seeing the Lower Zambezi National Park by boat or canoe whenever possible. As you drift down the river you can immerse yourself in its memorable scenes. Intersperse these with some safari drives and guided bush walks at dusk to see the landscapes and wildlife from every angle.
