Why we like it

  • Resting on a secluded riverine spot along the Zambezi River
  • Unique and individually designed houses: we love the Nut House for its stunning low viewpoint over the river
  • Gain first access to Livingstone Island – Tongabezi operate all tours here
  • Enjoy the magnificent views from The Lookout, a raised hideout designed purely for relaxing to the song of the river
  • For a more exclusive experience Sindabezi Island is a private retreat located nearby

A&K Top Tip

If the water levels are right, a trip to Livingstone Island is a must for a lunch, where David Livingstone first glimpsed ‘the smoke that thunders’

Guest Testimonial

Throughout the entire process I have had the utmost confidence in Robin Spanner and, as a result, A & K. If the holiday is anything like the booking process, I am certain I will be in very capable hands and it will be the holiday of a lifetime.

Tongabezi is a truly authentic African lodge on the banks of one of the continents mightiest and most iconic rivers. The Zambezi River is most famous as the river that feeds the tumultuous Victoria Falls, known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, which translates as ‘the smoke that thunders’ – an appropriate name that perfectly describes the crashing falls and the eerie vapour that rises up around them. The lodge is privately owned and run so a heartfelt, intimate experience can be guaranteed; every detail is covered with immaculate precision, from your welcome, to the fine cuisine, to your turndown service each night. Tongabezi takes its influence from the soul of Africa: even its name is derived from the local people and the river.

The lodge offers three different types of accommodation, from the five River Cottages with their high ceilings, full-length glass doors leading out onto a huge deck, and of course that unparalleled view of the river, to the stunning selection of individually-designed houses, each unique in its own way, spacious, airy and utterly luxurious. Lastly there is Sindabezi Island, an exclusive-use retreat in the middle of the river, offering the best views of the Zambezi. It offers the most private of experiences, with all the superb service of Tongabezi but the privacy of your own little slice of paradise.

The staff are also a credit to the lodge: from the seemingly unending knowledge of the expert guides to the smile of the maids as they greet you each morning, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve been welcomed home. Delectable treats are prepared by Zui, and a commitment to fresh, seasonal food, entertaining presentation and the chance to opt for more adventurous typical Zambian cuisine, you’ll not find yourself bored (or hungry).
