Just half an hour's drive south of Bulawayo is Matobo Hills National Park. This small, easily accessible game park contains some of the region's most arresting scenery. It is much under-rated and hence we urge you to go there.

Huge piles of red-tinged granite boulders (kopjes) litter the landscape. These hills were considered sacred by the Ndebele people and loved by Cecil Rhodes, who chose it as his last resting-place. He remains interred in the rock, his grave marked by a brass plaque at the aptly-named World's View, a vantage point high up on the rocks. The name Matobo was derived from the Matebele word for bald-headed.

Wildlife is found throughout the national park, including white rhino, leopard and Africa's largest concentration of leopard and black eagles. There are, however, no lion or elephant - meaning that you can walk freely amongst the hills and explore on your own, making it an intimate experience.
