Experience a surreal landscape like nowhere else on earth

The hauntingly beautiful Makgadikgadi Pans were formed thousands of years ago when the vast Lake Makgadikgadi dried up. Today you can watch these unique salt flats spring to life as the rains bring water, lush green grasses and herds of animals to their once arid landscape.

The Nwetwe, Sua and Nxai saltpans are surrounded by the sands of the Kalahari Desert. During the torrid dry season, when the grasslands on the outskirts of the pans are a vibrant shade of gold, only the most tenacious forms of flora and fauna may be found here: the inquisitive meerkat, brown hyena and graceful springbok still grace the pans even when the sun’s rays are at their most powerful.

But, if you time your tour from around November onwards, when the rains start to fall, you will find the pans playing host to southern Africa’s last-surviving migration. As the pans begin to fill with water, and the now-lush green grasslands attract hungry herds of wildebeest, zebra and antelope, a full suite of predators follow in their wake. And you’ll be there to see it from the prime positions reserved for you.

A perfect complement to your tailor-made Botswana safari holiday, we offer you a sterling range of accommodation available in the Makgadikgadi Pan, and we can especially recommend Jack’s Camp and San Camp as the ideal lodgings to enjoy the spectacle from.
