You can also meet the former headhunters of the Kadazan tribe in Monsopiad Village before you cruise along snaking rivers seeking out proboscis monkey and crocodile. UK - Kota Kinabalu

An overnight flight from the UK to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s captivating capital, will let you make the most of your time in Borneo.

Kota Kinabalu

Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa nestles in lush gardens on its own mini-peninsula. Pools, spa, fine dining and the South China Sea are just steps away from your sumptuous room. A short boat ride will deliver you to the protected waters of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. Here you can explore five tropical islands and snorkel or dive among the colourful corals and fish in the refreshing waters just offshore.

Kota Kinabalu

In between bouts of relaxing at the resort there will be private tours to discover more about Borneo’s fascinating cultures. At Monsopiad Cultural Village you’ll find that the Kazadan and Dusun peoples’ headhunting ways are now consigned to history, but you can still try your hand at traditional skills like blowpipe-shooting. After sampling the local lihing (rice wine) you may even feel brave enough to enter the House of Skulls and see the fearsome trophies collected by the legendary warrior Monsopiad.

Kota Kinabalu - Sandakan

Your flight to Sandakan offers stunning views of wild Borneo. Intricate waterways cut through dense forest, with very few roads in sight. This is where the ‘wild man of the forest’ lives: at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre you’ll watch young apes feeding and learning how to survive in the wild. An evening trip to the Puu Jih Shih Buddhist temple offers the chance to see the canopies take on the brilliant reds and oranges of the setting sun.

Pantai Dalit

Malaysia’s highest mountain, Kinabalu, towers over its eponymous UNESCO World Heritage National Park. Its craggy peak is surrounded by verdant rainforest which you can take gentle treks through. The forest is packed with an extraordinary variety of plants, like the carnivorous Nepenthes, which you’ll learn about on a guided walk. You’ll leave the rhododendrons and orchids when you ascend to reach a perfect vantage point across a lofty canopy walkway.

Pantai Dalit

Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort provides a packed menu of sports and activities that include sailing, kayaking and windsurfing on the azure seas. There’s also the chance to play a round of golf or enjoy a horse riding session. But those who prefer to be a little less active are equally well-catered for. You can unwind on a secluded beach or pamper yourself with a spa treatment.

Pantai Dalit - Kota Kinabalu - UK

Today you’ll have to tear yourself away from your tropical retreat, and head to the airport to catch your flight back to the UK.
