A charming spot in a country overflowing with charm
Languid rivers, rice paddies, rolling hills and lush jungles cover the landscape around Putao in northern Kachin State. Located in the shadow of the mighty Himalayas, close to the border with Tibet, Putao offers you the chance to experience tropical Asia at its best.
The town of Putao and the villages that surround it are made up of tar-stained wooden houses, dry stone walls and dusty lanes. Children lean out of upper windows waving at everyone that goes by. The area around Putao is an outdoor lover’s paradise. You can spend your days walking through minority villages, mountain biking down jungle paths, enjoying river trips to remote settlements and exploring the dense jungle.
Despite its far-flung location, accommodation in Putao can be very good. Our favourite is the Malikha Lodge. This truly beautiful hotel in the village of Mulashidi, is set on the banks of the Namlang River. Here, you’ll be able to escape the stresses and strains of the modern world and explore the rural villages, jungles, rivers and hills that make the region so unique.
