Spend a day chilling on Cloud 9 surrounded by nothing but turquoise water and coral reef. Cloud 9 is a floating pontoon in the middle of the ocean complete with a well-stocked bar, wood-fired pizzeria and surround sound system.

Why we like it

  • Romantic adult-only haven, with Beachfront Bures and Villas
  • Vale Ni Biau Restaurant serves a daily changing a la carte menu of international cuisine with a fusion of Fijian flavour
  • Island activities vary from coconut bowling and basket weaving lessons to beach volleyball and mountain hikes

About Matamanoa

Matamanoa Island Resort is an intimate and secluded haven in the Fiji’s Mamanuca archipelago. With a policy of no day trippers and no children under 16 years old, you can be sure to enjoy complete privacy and tranquillity, with little else but the azure waters and vibrant marine life for company. Not far from Nadi International Airport, this dreamy island can be reached by high-speed catamaran, private speedboat or helicopter. Hidden in tropical jungle, the Resort Rooms have their own private covered veranda with garden views and are within easy reach of all the main facilities. Our favourite, however, are the Beachfront Villas and Bures with private plunge pool, day bed and direct access to the white sand beach.

Leisure activities and cultural excursions abound on Matamanoa; from a game of tennis or coconut bowling, to swimming in the infinity pool and snorkelling in the Pacific. If you’re an avid diver, you may see Manta Rays, Marlin, Barracuda, reef sharks and turtles, at Mamanuca Lagoon’s numerous dives sites; we particularly enjoyed the Namotu Wall, a stunning coral cay with great visibility and a wide array of multi-hued marine life. The resort also offers a good selection of day trips. Monuriki Island, made famous by Tom Hanks in Castaway, is a short boat ride away from Matamanoa; during a visit, you can see the set locations as well as searching for the rare Fiji Crested Iguana, which is only found on two other islands in the world.
