Highlights of Southern Iceland

Discover Iceland’s otherwordly wonders. Begin your journey in Reykjavik, the country’s colourful capital. Visit the Golden Circle to see the geysers, waterfalls and volcanic craters at Thingvellir National Park. Get close to Mother Nature on the South Shore, where you’ll enjoy a super-jeep safari in Thor’s Valley and see Seljarlandsfoss waterfall and Eyjafjallajokull glacier.

UK to Reykavík

At the airport, meet your A&K representative, who will assist you with the conveniently short transfer to Hotel Skuggi. Skuggi is a conveniently located, art-filled hotel that offers tasteful and minimal design.

Reykjanes Peninsula

Become immersed in the elementally powerful landscape of the Reykjanesskagi Peninsula. At Iceland’s third-largest lake, Kleifarvatn, you’ll hear about the 2000 earthquake, which drained away more than 20 per cent of the lake’s water, created a new hot spring and inspired author Arnaldur Indridason to write a new novel. Then, it’s off to the Seltún Geothermal Area to see its bubbling mud pools, thermal springs and fumaroles. Your next stop is Krysuvíkurbjarg. These dramatic cliffs are one of the best bird-watching spots in Iceland. Finally, the conditions are right; you might be able to hike up Fagradalsfjall to witness the raw power of Mother Nature.

Golden Circle

Today you’ll explore Iceland’s famed Golden Circle, the region that showcases the best of the country’s otherworldly beauty. Thingvellir National Park is a dramatic landscape of waterfalls, lakes, geysers and craters, and it’s of immense historical value. The Viking settlers established their annual General Assembly (the Althing) here in 930 CE, and it continued until as late as 1799. You can marvel at The Great Geyser, Iceland’s most famous, and Stokkur, the most energetic. You couldn’t visit the Golden Circle without stopping at Gullfoss (‘Golden Falls’) to see its power and beauty.

South Shore

Explore Iceland’s incredible South Shore, which stretches from Reykavík in the west to the Jokulsarlon glacier in the east. In this geologically young area, enjoy seeing magnificent waterfalls and black-sand beaches. Visit the dramatic Seljarlandsfoss waterfall, which flows with the meltwater of the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier. A footpath behind the waterfall affords a unique perspective of the 18-metre falls. It’s well worth the potential soaking. You’ll also see the Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks protruding from the stormy Atlantic and the Skógafoss waterfall, thundering down into a small canyon.

Thórsmörk Valley

Today, visit Thor’s hidden valley (Thórsmörk), which lies nestled between the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull. Enjoy a super-jeep safari in the Thorsmork Valley and explore the Gígjökull glacial outlet. Take a short hike into the canyon of Stakkholtsgjá, and you’ll be rewarded with the views of the thundering waterfall. End the day at the high falls of Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfurabúi, which gushes into a hidden canyon. A delicious lunch is included.

Depart Reykavík, Iceland

Enjoy a transfer to the airport from Hotel Skuggi to catch your flight home.
