South Shore

Explore the volcanos, lava fields and crater lakes of Iceland from the comfort of a super-jeep adapted to cope with the rugged terrain of the southern highlands. Join your expert driver to venture across this oasis meandering through soaring mountains and sprawling lava fields as you make your way towards the soothing geothermal hot springs of Landmannalaugar.

On your journey you’ll pass the impressive sight of Hekla volcano and witness a region of great contrasts with black ridges and colourful hue of the rhyolite mountains which appear green, red, yellow and orange.  As you pass the 1,491-metre high volcano don’t forget to study its steaming, snow-capped crater. Legend has it this is the “Gateway to Hell”. The active Hekla last erupted in the year 2000. Today, it’s still a popular spot for hiking and skiing.

Marvel at the sight of Ljótipollur a beautiful crater lake, which is not truly represented by its name, which literally means “ugly pond”. Formed in 1477 in an explosive eruption it lies in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Capture the stunning blue waters, green vegetation and contrasting vivid red lava rock on camera to share with family and friends.

After your road trip relax by a taking a dip in the natural hot springs of Landmannalaugar.  Known as the “People’s Pools”. The town nestles beside the black Laugahraun lava field and is famous for its mineral-rich waters one of which is Bláhylur lake, a magnificent body of water nestling in a dormant volcanic crater.
