The Voyage North

Experience the magic of the fjords, on this authentic Hurtigruten Bergen to Kirkenes cruise. Sail the sheltered waters of the Norwegian coastline, from Bergen towards the Russian border town of Kirkenes. On the way you’ll discover the wonders of the polar north, crossing the Arctic Circle to the Lofoten Islands. You’ll journey to Europe's most northern point where you’ll have the opportunity to travel out to the North Cape Plateau where you’ll get an eerie sense of being at the end of the world, as well as the chance to admire the birdlife.

Embarkation in Bergen

On your arrival at Bergen, you’ll join your cruise. Later in the evening, your voyage will set sail through the Hjeltefjord, following in the wake of the Vikings who ventured from here to the Shetland Islands and beyond.

Today, you’ll enjoy the natural landscape of the Norwegian coastline as you sail towards Ålesund , a city renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture.

The Royal City of Trondheim

Today, you’ll visit the Royal City of Trondheim. Here, we recommend that you take a moment to enjoy the views from the Gamle Bybrua or Old Town Bridge, which dates back to 1861. Marvel too at Nidaros Cathedral, Norway's largest Gothic edifice, built between 1070 and 1300. In the afternoon we set a northwest course, passing the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse, as well as numerous islets and rocky outcrops.

Arctic Circle and Lofoten Islands

This morning you’ll cross the Arctic Circle and by evening you’ll have reached the Lofoten Islands. This archipelago is renowned for its many picturesque fishing villages, surrounded by majestic mountains.

Troms, the gateway to the Arctic

After stopping in Harstad, you’ll continue, via Finnsnes, to Troms, where you’ll enjoy a longer stay. Many of the epic Arctic expeditions departed from Troms. And, should you choose, you can embark on an expedition of your own, with our optional miniature kayak tour.

Honningsvag and the North Cape

You’ll sail through Mager ysund before stopping in Hammerfest. After another stop in Havoysund, you’ll reach Honningsvag, the gateway to the North Cape. Here, you can choose to visit the North Cape Plateau where you’ll get an eerie sense of being at the end of the world. Continental Europe's northernmost point, the area is also renowned for its birdlife. Before arriving at Kjollefjord, you’ll enjoy a demonstration of traditional fishing techniques.

Disembark in Kirkenes

The last port on your northbound voyage is Kirkenes. At longitude 30°E, you’re actually further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. Travel here in spring and you may still be able to participate in some winter activities and excursions.
