A few streets away and in complete contrast is L’Eixample, a district in the city centre with imposing architecture, including Plaça Catalunya and the Passeig de Gràcia with its unusual boutiques and designer shops.
You’ll spot Gaudí influences everywhere, from the spooky Casa Batlló peering over the city centre to quirky Park Güell, with its curving rainbow of mosaic tiles. The dominating Sagrada Família boldly reaches skywards with its unfinished towers. It is both daring and modern, as well as romantic and crumbling.
Food and drink are a particular delight too: throw yourself into La Boqueria, a food market bristling with energy and local flavour. After dark, sample Catalonian tapas standing at a local bar or among the fashion houses at Tapaç 24. End your night at Dry Martini, a speakeasy where you’re served by gloved waiters in white tuxedos. Then recover the following morning on a daybed at La Barceloneta's laid-back beaches.
