Discover India

Discover northern India on this nine-night holiday. Our suggested itinerary starts with two days in bustling, buzzing Delhi. Based in New Delhi, spend a day exploring there, followed by another in Old Delhi. Take India’s fastest train to nearby Agra, home of the enchanting Taj Mahal. See this icon at sunset and sunrise. Next visit the enchanting Pink City of Jaipur and romantic white-hued Udaipur. You’ll stay in wonderful, charming havelis. Escapists will love getting to know the locals, cycling the streets, shopping in the markets and seeing the real, unadulterated India.

UK – Delhi

Wing your way to Delhi through the night.

Touch down in Delhi’s bustling capital. A member of the A&K team will scoop you out the hustle of Arrivals and whisk you to Haveli Dharampura, a tranquil oasis  – your new home, at least temporarily. The afternoon is free for exploration of New Delhi – the Lodi Gardens are just across the road. This peaceful park is dotted with beautiful tombs. A short drive away are Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutab Minar. Or alternatively have a dip in the temperature-controlled pool and take afternoon tea in the palm tree-lined court. It’s up to you.

Today take to Old Delhi’s streets to experience the history, colours and flavours of this larger-than-life city. Old Delhi is a medieval scene full of timeless bazaars and jumbles of alleyways. With your guide, spice up your life today at the city’s Spice Market. Meet the vendors hawking their wares – huge bags of cumin, turmeric, chilli, cardamom and more. It was these precious spices that changed in world in the Middle Ages. Columbus looking for a quick route to India stumbled across America. De Gama rounded Africa looking for spices and Magellan circumnavigated the globe.

Delhi – Agra

Day four and you’re off to the beautiful, riverside city of Agra. Hop aboard the Gatimann Express, India’s fastest-ever train, for the 100-minute trip to Agra. This train boasts hosts and bone-china crockery. India’s railway minister hailed the train’s launch the ‘new era of high-speed travel’. The first of Agra’s two key must-visit destinations are UNESCO World Heritage Site, Agra Fort. This red-hued, 11th century walled city is a remnant of the Mughal Empire. Check it out, followed by seeing Agra’s other icon – the Taj Mahal – at sunset.

Agra – Jaipur

If you can bear to leave your comfy bed, get up early to see the sun rise over the breath-taking Taj Mahal. This is our top choice of iconic Indian experiences. Later in the morning, it’s time to go to the next point on the golden triangle, Pink City of Jaipur. You’ll take a little detour to see a magnificent sandstone fortified city of Fatehpur Sikri. It was the capital of the Mughal empire between 1569 and 1586, when Emperor Akbar had to move the capital to Delhi due to the city’s inadequate water supply.

Having enjoyed a night in a soulful, 18th-century haveli, hop on a bike for an early morning cycling tour of the city. Navigate Jaipur’s narrow city streets, en route to the city’s fresh fruit and vegetable markets. Dismount to peruse the stalls brimming with everything from mangoes and papayas to okra and ginger. Watching locals haggle with vendors is sheer real-life street theatre. The rest of the day is yours to do with as you wish. The city is full of magnificent palaces, vibrant markets and chic cafes. If this is your first time in Jaipur, must-sees are Jantar Mantar, the honeycomb Hawa Mahal and the fairy-tale Amber Fort.

Jaipur – Udaipur

Today you’ll be taken on the scenic drive to Udaipur. Your hotel is a petite haveli of just 20 rooms in one of the best spots in town. It overlooks the lake, the town, the City and Lake Palaces.

Udaipur is India's most romantic city. Its tumbling, white-washed mansions are beside shimmering Pichola Lake. The Aravalli Hills hug the city. Immerse yourself in Udaipur's distinctive architecture and arts and crafts. Start at the City Palace. This flamboyant fusion of Rajasthani and Mughal design is replete with mirrored walls, marble balconies and the spectacular Peacock Courtyard. Wander Udaipur's alleyways on a journey of discovery. There's exquisite craftsmanship around every corner.
