Uncover the origins of Britain’s favourite hot brew in Sri Lanka’s tea plantations

As a nation of tea drinkers we love a good cuppa, and the chances are some of the tea you are drinking has come from the tea plantations of Sri Lanka.

Hatton and Nuwara Eliya are at the heart of Sri Lanka's tea plantations and a lasting monument to British colonial rule. Known as Little England, Nuwara Eliya is very English in style with manicured lawns and Georgian architecture. A visit to this area would not be complete without a trip to one of the many tea estates to discover the history of its tea and the different types grown here.

A great way to experience the region is on a scenic rail journey through the lush greenery from Hatton – you will see tea pickers in their colourful saris on the green hillsides and get to try some of the best brews in the country.

Staying in a luxury converted tea planter’s bungalow or a converted tea factory is a novel way to explore the area. From your base you can follow the many walking trails through undulating hills and enjoy some amazing food upon your return.
