Highlights

Discover the Deep South

Hit the road on a self-drive around the Deep South. You’ll love discovering the history, trend-setting culture, rustic cuisine and magnificent scenery. In Atlanta, visit the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr., then head to the Great Smoky Mountains. Stop by Dollywood for a roller coaster ride and a little country music history. In Memphis, explore Graceland, the former home of Elvis, then head-nod to the blues on Beale Street. We can arrange a private tour of Elvis’s old haunts, or a visit to RCA Studio B. Wrap up in New Orleans, on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

UK - Atlanta

As you arrive in vibrant Atlanta, pick up your hire car and check into the Loews Atlanta hotel, your base for the next few nights. Discover the city’s iconic modern attractions, as well as its crucial part in the Civil Rights Movement. Drive to the birthplace of Dr Martin Luther King Jr. in the Sweet Auburn district for a ranger-lead tour, and stop by Ebenezer Baptist Church and Fire Station No. 6.

Great Smoky Mountains

With blues playing on your radio, head north to Chattanooga for a pit stop at the famous Tennessee Aquarium, home to 800 species of aquatic wildlife. Then continue along the road to the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, where resort cities such as Gatlinburg nestle. While here, hike or cycle around the Smokies, America’s most visited national park. Enjoy the rides at Dolly Parton’s theme park, Dollywood, or nip across to the university town of Knoxville.

Nashville

This morning, head west to the country music capital of Nashville and check into the Kimpton Aertson hotel, your home for the night. Head out to the Ryman Auditorium, Grand Ole Opry and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. At dusk, pull up a stool and chill out to live music at a classic honky-tonk such as Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

Memphis

Drive to the heartland of blues, the soulful city of Memphis. Here you can explore the memorabilia of the Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum; everything from famous instruments to iconic outfits are on show. Be sure to stop by the former home of Elvis, Graceland, for a guided tour – you can even stay the night here in the Guest House. Later, take a walk down Beale Street, synonymous with the history of blues.

Greenwood

In the heart of the Mississippi Delta, spend a day in the former boomtown of Greenwood. This cool cat of a city, with its leafy boulevards and Tudor-style architecture, has strong links to blues music and the Civil Rights Movement. Explore the history of this charming place, then spend the night at boutique hotel The Alluvian, recipient of the AAA Four Dimond Award.

Natchez

Today, hit the rural roads of Tennessee, wind along the picturesque Natchez Trace Parkway, before crossing into Tupelo, Mississippi. Here you can visit Elvis’s birthplace, a quaint whitewashed house built by his father, along with the Elvis museum and his childhood church. Continue on to Jackson, a treasure trove of African-American and Civil Rights history, before resting up in Natchez. While in this vibrant, river-side city, filled with antebellum mansions, bed down at the Monmouth Historic Inn.

New Orleans

Arrive in New Orleans. Drive to New Iberia and learn about plantation life before visiting the world-famous Tabasco Sauce factory on Avery Island. With its spooky history and ornate tombs, Lafayette Cemetery is a popular film location worth a visit. We recommend an afternoon aboard an authentic 19th-century paddle wheeler; while you cruise down the Mississippi, relax to soothing jazz as you conclude your time in the Deep South.

New Orleans - UK

Today, travel to New Orleans Airport for your return flight via Atlanta. With a head full of jazz and a piece of your heart in the Mississippi, bid the Deep South adieu.
