Epic honeymoon

Sparkling with cultural capital, Japan is sure to seduce you. Begin your epic honeymoon here in Tokyo, a modern metropolis and ancient conurbation rolled into one. Pass by Shibuya, the world’s most famous intersection; explore the quirky cafés of Akihabara, themed on everything from cats to anime; then, at the end of surreal days sightseeing, dine in style in some of the world’s finest restaurants. For a room with a view, stay at the Conrad Tokyo. The hotel overlooks Tokyo Bay and offers impeccable service, luxurious rooms and fine-dining at the award-winning China Blue restaurant.

In contrast to the bright lights of Tokyo, the mountain town of Hakone just two hours away feels like another world. Here, Mount Fuji looms above the lake and hot springs are sprinkled amongst the hills. Ride cable cars to visit springs, shrines, steaming rivers and sulphurous pools, and bed down in a traditional ryokan, complete with comfy futons and far-reaching views. These small, traditional homes are perfect for honeymooners as they offer peace and intimacy, far from the crowds. Some, such as A&K favourite Ginyu Ryokan Hakone, even have private onsens (hot spring baths) to while away dreamy hours under the shadow of mythical Mount Fuji.

A scenic rail journey through mountains and gorges to Takayama propels you further into this wonderland, before your visit to one of the town’s many sake breweries. Wander the ancient alleyways and narrow streets for a glimpse back in time. Another spectacular train ride will transport you to Hiroshima. Despite past tragedies, the city has undergone an inspiring regeneration, exemplified by the poignant Peace Memorial Park. While here, be sure to visit the ‘shrine island’ of Itsukushima, famous for its toriis (gates), temples and pagodas, and a riot of colour in spring and autumn.

The speedy Shinkansen (bullet train) makes short work of the journey to Kyoto, arguably Japan’s most intoxicating city. To truly grasp the unique local culture, head to the house of a Japanese tea ceremony master, where you can learn about these traditional ceremonies and their long association with Zen Buddhism. You could spend weeks wandering around Kyoto, glimpsing Geisha skittering along the streets, exploring its innumerable temples, castles and gardens.
