HIGHLIGHTS

  • Browse the stylish bars and restaurants of Perth
  • Snorkel with dazzling reef fish –and, from April to July, possibly with whale sharks
  • Hike through rocky gorges to spot wallabies and emus
  • Relax on the fine sand lining the shores of Ningaloo Marine Park

Day 1 Perth
Perth, you may be surprised to hear, is Australia's sunniest big city. Also, arguably its hippest: a decade of rejuvenation has sparked a surge in great places to eat, drink, shop and stay –typified by the Richardson Hotel &Spa, a luxury boutique property that pulls off the classic Aussie trick of being both supremely stylish and warmly welcoming. Roam the green expanses of King's Park, overlooking the broad Swan River, before strolling the streets of Subiaco, lined with chic restaurants and cafés.

Day 2 Perth / Ningaloo Reef Marine Park
Look down during your exhilarating 20-minute scenic flight from Perth to Exmouth, over the impressive limestone plateaux of Cape Range National Park, and you'll see a dark stripe hugging the coast: the 260km expanse of Ningaloo Reef. The world's largest fringing coral reef isn't just huge, it's also breathtakingly beautiful, swarming with marine life –and only metres from the beach. Matching the spectacle of the reef is your base for the next four nights, the exclusive safari camp Sal Salis –just nine luxurious eco-wilderness tents gazing over the turquoise waters that lap the sand just steps away. Watch the sun set into the Indian Ocean as you toast your Aussie adventure over dinner.

Day 3 Ningaloo Reef Marine Park

Forget Jaws –the world's biggest fish is far larger, and much friendlier: the whale shark, 12 metres of star-spangled, filter-feeding might. Between April and July these beautiful behemoths congregate at Ningaloo;board a luxury boat and don mask and snorkel to swim with these majestic giants –an experience of a lifetime. Even if the whale sharks are elsewhere, the reef is alive with creatures great and small –and there are few greater than the humpback whale, which you can watch from the deck as they migrate past this coast between August and November en route to Antarctica.

Day 4 Ningaloo Reef Marine Park

At Sal Salis you're literally seconds from some of the world's best snorkelling action: it's as simple as ambling down to the beach and diving in. The reef stretches just a few dozen metres offshore, bustling with colourful clownfish, small sharks, and even sometimes manta rays and sea turtles. Head the other way to explore the red-rock gorges of Cape Range National Park on a guided hike, spotting rock wallabies, colourful galahs and perhaps even emus.

Day 5 Ningaloo Reef Marine Park / Perth

Swap sandy shores for sophistication, taking the short flight back to Perth of an evening browsing the city's restaurant and bars in the vibrant Northbridge and Subiaco districts.

Day 6 Perth
It's time to get over Down Under, and return to Perth Airport for your flight back to the UK.
