Set on the banks of the Danube, the capital of Austria - and Europe's cultural capital - is a bustling metropolis bursting with unique charm, vibrancy and flair. The elegance of Old Europe is alive and well in Vienna and there are sightseeing opportunities aplenty as you wander through narrow medieval alleyways and stroll across imperial squares. Through time, many great composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert favoured Vienna, and the city is now the classical music capital of Europe and plays host to many elegant balls and concerts. You can visit the hall where Mozart gave his first recital, walk the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace and enjoy a performance at the magnificent State Opera House. Packed with imperial history, Vienna also offers contemporary museums, lively nightlife and of course, a vibrant café culture - there's nothing better than enjoying a slice of delicious apple strudel at your favourite coffee house and watching the world go by.
Sights favoured by most include the official residence of the President of Austria, Hofburg Palace and one of the most prominent landmarks in the city, St Stephen's Cathedral. Taking more than two centuries to construct, a tour inside this architectural marvel is an awe-inspiring experience, but to top off your visit, we recommend making your way up the 343 steps to the bell keeper's room in the South Tower, from where you can enjoy panoramic city views.
Spring is particularly pretty throughout Europe as the temperate climate awakens the flora of the region. Wet winters result in green springs and the mountains and plains come alive with blossom and flowers. This region enjoys pleasant warm summers and inland regions can be very hot in July and August, coinciding with the busiest periods. May, June and September are recommended due to the pleasant temperatures, though with fewer crowds. Eastern Europe tends to experience very cold winters, especially in inland areas. This is a pretty time to visit and many Eastern and Central European cities and towns hold traditional Christmas Fairs complete with decorated trees and festive entertainment.
