Gangtey

Located in the spectacularly beautiful glacial valley of Phojika, Gangtey is a renowned conservation area for the rare black-necked cranes that migrate here every year from the Tibetan plateau.  Rich in wildlife, the wide sweeping valley stands in contrast to the dense forests that cover most of Bhutan, and is a popular area for trekking and mountain-biking.  Routes start from the Gangteng Gonpa in the Phobjika Valley and pass the villages of Kumbu, Gedachen and Khebayathang, before finishing in the Kungathang Lhakhang. Gangtey is also home to Gangtey Gonpa, the only Nyingmapa monastery on the western side of the black mountain.

Best time to be there

Bhutan offers warm days and cool nights all year round. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear for mountain photography. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.
