Blessed with a temperate climate and fed by the Pho Chu (male) and Mo Chu (female) rivers, the city of Punaka is set within a green picturesque valley. The capital of Bhutan until 1955, the city retains the stately atmosphere of its past and affords views of the majestic Himalayas. The Punakha Dzong or 'the palace of great happiness' is the city's main cultural and spiritual draw. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to serve as the religious and administrative centre of the region, the monastery has recently been restored to its former glory. With mountain biking, rafting and trekking available, the valley is fantastic place for outdoor adventure lovers.
Best time to be there
Bhutan offers warm days and cool nights all year round. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear for mountain photography. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.
