weather

In a country as geographically diverse as Bolivia, local weather patterns vary greatly, however for most people the climate is generally cooler than they expect. In the highlands, the dry season is between May and October. In La Paz and Sucre, temperatures during the day are a pleasant 20º C. Uyuni and Potosi however, can be cold in the middle of the day, and temperatures drop below freezing at night. The Amazon average daytime temperature is 30-32º C with tropical rains on a daily basis (which increase in the wet season), while nights can cool down to 20º C.

INFORMATION ABOUT BOLIVIA

Bolivia: home of towering snow-capped mountains, lush Amazonian rainforest - and a truly amazing proposal spot. Our returning traveller told us his tale. He was exploring Potosi's famous silver mines when the A&K guide chiselled off a lump of the precious ore as a gift. By next day it was encased in a pure white salt heart - hewn from the crystals of the Salar de Uyuni - that the kneeling traveller then offered to his girlfriend on a volcanic island surrounded by the bright light world.

A&K can't promise all our Bolivian guides are so effective at oiling the romantic wheels, but we guarantee they know this savagely beautiful country inside out. They work for our highly experienced South American team who offer the most knowledgeable staff, best vehicles - essential for sometimes testing conditions - and seamless travel links to surrounding countries.

Take a Bolivian holiday with Abercrombie & Kent and we'll reveal some of the continent's most astounding scenery. The 3,200m entry point La Paz sets the tone. Your letters repeatedly thank our brilliant guide, Erich, for his advice on coping with altitude - and we imagine you'll also be praising the spectacular city's new wave of gourmet restaurants.

Head east for the verdant Amazon Basin, an enticing blend of jungle and savannah wetlands. Further west the Andean wall rises up to the Altiplano where shimmering Titicaca - the world's highest lake - is punctuated by islands revered by the Incas, and fringed by the Cordillera Real's dreamy peaks.

The scenery is equally splendid in the south. The surreal Salar de Uyuni could have been designed by Salvador Dali with 12,000 square kilometres of crystallized salt lake. Between January and April surface water alchemises it into a super sized mirror reflecting the sky and swallowing the horizon. Your A&K 4WD appears to fly rather than drive.

But Bolivia delivers more than nature. Sucre is a serene white-walled honey pot of monasteries, churches and Spanish architecture, while Potosi contains the colonial mint beneath Cerro Rico, the mountain of silver mines that bankrolled Spain's former economic supremacy.

So was our guest's proposal successful? Yes. And he was so impressed he used A&K to book his honeymoon in France. Show less...
