Every child studies Roman history, and nothing brings it to life like a visit to Rome. What's more, the Italians love children, and produce the best ice-cream in the world.
Need any more convincing? Read on… The Colosseum is the outdoor classroom at its best, with children seeing it for the 'theatre' it once was. The gory stories of battles between gladiators, animals, slaves and prisoners will keep junior (and senior) guests captivated. Those looking to extend their history lesson further can join a gladiator school. Dressing in traditional gladiator tunics children will learn the basic techniques of gladiatorial sword fighting – two hours of sword-wielding Spartacus role play – it doesn't get much cooler than that.
Jump into the Fiat 500 B, an iconic car and a fun ride to boot. Travel along the exciting streets of Rome with your private guide at the wheel. Whizzing down the small cobbled streets you'll avoid much of the chaotic city traffic as you head off for your next lesson, although not history this time.
Learn the art of creating the perfect pizza, and then over to you as you demonstrate your newly-learnt knowledge. Having gone to all the trouble to make it, it would be rude not to eat it now, wouldn't it? Room for dessert? We'll take you to one of the city's best gelato bars for a behind the scenes visit and an afternoon of ice-cream tasting – are 65 flavours too many?
Time for more gore...How about a visit to the bone church or checking out the Catacombs (the bones under the city). One of the most impressive and unusual burial sites in Italy, and probably the spookiest place in Rome, is the Capuchin Crypt beneath the Capuchin Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1645. The crypt contains bones of over 4,000 monks, many arranged in patterns or even forming objects such as a clock.
When you're ready for some fresh air and open space, hop on bikes and head to the wide green gardens of Villa Borghese with its museums, theatre and lake. A great spot for a picnic in the heart of the city.
Wrap up the break's history lesson with a visit to Time Elevator. A multi-sensory show with seats on special moving platforms, panoramic screens, flight simulators and a state-of-the-art surround sound system, you'll 'journey' through 3,000 years of Roman history in just 45 minutes!

Debbie loves exploring the World, but Africa is her true passion and she know it intimately. Her favourite travel memory is sitting in a canoe on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe watching the sun go down behind the Matusadona Mountains whilst listening to the sound of hippos splashing around us. Next on her list is Vietnam as it has several of the world's top beaches along with an amazing history, world heritage sites and fabulous cuisine. It's also really easy to see a lot in Vietnam in a very short time.
