The capital city of China, Beijing, lies in the alluvial plain between the Bai He and the Yongding He rivers and is partly encircled by mountains which are crowned with the eastern section of the Great Wall of China.
Beijing has been the political and cultural heart of China for centuries and has the monuments, parks and palaces to prove it. Amongst its most famous historical sights are Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace) and Tiananmen Square, which in 1989 was the site of student protest violently suppressed by the army and not forgetting the Forbidden City (the Imperial Palace known as the Gu Gong) which was built between 1406 and 1420 by the Ming emperor Yong Le.
Explore the industrial factory complex, Beijing's most active art enclave - Factory 798, which over the decade has been transformed into a flourishing centre for contemporary art - painting, sculpture, installation, and performance art. Artists and galleries, established studios and exhibitions have been converted in these deserted factory spaces.
Abercrombie & Kent's Beijing holidays and tours are the perfect way to explore this vibrant city.
Best time to be there

Each guide was very helpful and knowledgeable too. The hotels you selected were all beautiful with excellent service – we were particularly impressed with the wonderful Lodge in PingAn and the modern and welcoming Temple House in Chengdu. The train between Shanghai and Beijing was also a great journey – thank you for thinking to organise the Red Cap porter service as well!
