Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve is perched in the Tilaran mountains in Costa Rica's verdant highlands, surrounded by mists and emerald green foliage and home to abundant flora and fauna. Although sightings of large cats and tapir here are extremely rare, you should spot monkeys and even possibly the quetzal bird in the summer months while exploring the myriad of well-marked walking trails in the Reserve in a magical and peaceful atmosphere. Access to the Monteverde region and the nearby town of Santa Elena is by 4WD vehicle and may sometimes be less accessible during the wetter season May - September. Also visit Monteverde as a combination with Arenal Volcano, crossing Lake Arenal to reach the mystical slopes of this cloudforest region.
