Considering its importance as the 'official residence' of none other than Santa Claus, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Rovaniemi was perhaps a little plain to be the home of the father of festive cheer. The town itself won't win any prizes for beauty, but its stunning riverside location more than makes up for any aesthetic shortcomings. The gateway to the north, Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and a more or less obligatory stop when visiting the north. Much of the town was destroyed in World War II (the mains streets supposedly rebuilt in the shape of a reindeer) but its newly constructed churches, galleries and museums are well worth a look. While Rovaniemi is an ideal base when visiting Lapland or further north, it's also a great spot for viewing the Northern Lights.
May through to September offers the mildest weather and the highest number of travellers. This is the time of the long, long summer days in the land of the midnight sun. Further north in Lapland, October to March are good times to visit to enjoy winter activities, such as ice swimming and dog sledding and it is the best time to see the spectacular Northern Lights. Helsinki is great to visit all year round.

Our recent awards
We were genuinely sad to leave India but as they say all good things come to an end. I reiterate my thanks to everybody at Abercrombie and Kent. We have travelled extensively and have lots of experience of similar high class travel companies. However, we thought that your service was exemplary in all respects. All of your staff were frankly brilliant and you organised a holiday that we will never forget.
