For a sense of Greece's rural identity, the unspoilt Halkidiki peninsula near Thessaloniki is definitely worth a visit. The area incorporates the kind of scenery and you would dream of when imagining coastal Greece; with beautiful beaches, blue skies, azure seas and sprawling pine forests, Halkidiki has some of the best scenery in the country.
Although it isn't as well-known as other Greek destinations, there is no better destination to settle in to the Greek way of life. With over 40 idyllic Blue Flag beaches stretching across more than 500km of coastline, numerous archaeological sites and plenty of sleepy little fishing villages, you'll be spoilt for choice.
Halkidiki, with its three-pronged peninsula jutting into the turquoise sea; conjures up thoughts of Poseidon's trident. Each 'prong' offers something different: Kassandra, with its white-sand beaches and pine headlands that wouldn't be out of place in the Caribbean has a wide range of hotels, tavernas and bars, while Mount Athos is a World Heritage Site home to over 40 monasteries that is only open for day trips. Rugged Sithonia, though, is the jewel in Halkidiki's crown. A tiny fishing village with sprawling pine forests and numerous walking trails, here you can choose to hire a boat and explore romantic coves or spend lazy days on deserted beaches before strolling down to the waterfront to enjoy the catch of the day for your supper.

Best time to be there
The mainland and islands are very hot and dry in July and especially August, the preferred travel month for French, Italian and Spanish holiday makers, making conditions busy, hotel availability limited and the beaches crowded. May, June and September are infinitely more comfortable and generally less expensive.
Rhodes, with its refreshing westerly winds and moderate summer heat, makes it the ideal place to travel for a summer holiday or a short break in the spring or Autumn.
